Helping Families Feel Better

Raising children is the most exciting, exhausting, frustrating, and rewarding job in which one could ever engage. It is arguably the most important job one could have as well. The needs and expectations are without end and the pressure can be daunting. Yet parents must rise above the obstacles in order to equip themselves and their children with the tools that will allow their entire family to succeed - emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

Being a child can be really tough, too. Family difficulties, emotional challenges, peer pressure, bullying, learning disabilities, substance experimentation, physical changes, and cultural influences all can make the journey through childhood and adolescence a seemingly overwhelming ordeal, hindering a child from reaching his or her amazing potential. For families who have utilized adoption or foster care, there are particular questions and bumps in the road that may need to be specially addressed as other challenges are met head-on.

It is Kristi’s view that people are generally doing their best with the tools they have available. With the support and accountability found in the counseling relationship, Kristi’s clients are encouraged to explore new tools, ones that can enhance their view of themselves and the world around them. The theories and practices she implements include treating each individual in a holistic manner, recognizing the importance of family and social systems in a person’s growth, and seeing people as creative and social beings who need encouragement to thrive.

Play therapy is a highly effective approach to counseling using toys, art materials, games, and other play media. Kristi uses the philosophies and practices of play therapy, which allows children to explore their feelings and practice new ways of behaving through their first language — play. Prevention is as important as treatment in her work with children and parents.
